About this setting

Square in, circle out

WhatsApp stores profile photos as squares and shows them in a circle, from a tiny icon in the chat list to a large view when someone taps it. 500 × 500 pixels is plenty for both and keeps the file small.

The circle hides the four corners of the square. Centre your face, leave a little space above your head and keep any text away from the edges.

Tips

  • Start from a photo with your face in the middle — the square is cut from the centre.
  • Leave some space above your head so the circle does not cut it off.
  • A plain or blurred background makes the small chat-list icon easier to recognise.

FAQ

Good to know

  • What size should a WhatsApp DP be?
Any square works, because WhatsApp shows it in a circle. 500 × 500 pixels is sharp on every phone and small to upload.
  • Why does WhatsApp cut off my profile photo?
The square is shown as a circle, which hides the corners. Keep your face in the centre with some space around it.
  • Can I use a whole wide photo without cropping?
Not as a profile picture, which must be square. To keep a wide scene, extend the photo to a square with the AI image expander first.
