About this setting
The limits this setting applies
The US Department of State's online forms, such as the DS-160 visa application and the Diversity Visa entry, take a square JPG of 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels that is no larger than 240 KB. This setting crops your photo square from the centre, resizes it to 600 × 600, saves it as JPG and keeps it under 240 KB at the highest quality that fits.
File size and pixels are only part of the rules. The photo must also show your full face and the top of your shoulders on a plain white or off-white background, and be recent. This tool does not check those. Take the photo against a plain white wall; the passport photo maker can then help with the head size and position.
Tips
- Use a straight-on photo with your head in the middle, because the square is cut from the centre.
- Stand in front of a plain white wall in even light, with no shadow behind you.
- Other countries' online forms use other sizes; check the form before you upload.

Will the DS-160 form accept the result?
It meets the file rules: square, 600 × 600 pixels, JPG, under 240 KB. Acceptance also depends on the photo itself — background, head size, expression and lighting — which this tool does not check.Why does the form reject my photo when the size is right?
