About this setting

Why PNG files are so large

PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly, which is ideal for logos and screenshots but wasteful for photos. A photo saved as PNG is often five to ten times the size of the same photo as a JPG. This tool makes the file smaller by saving it in a lossy format — WebP by default, because it keeps transparency.

It does not re-optimise the PNG itself. If you must keep the PNG format, for a print shop or an app icon for example, the file size stays close to the original; choose WebP wherever the place you upload to accepts it.

Tips

  • Keep WebP selected for logos and cut-outs with a transparent background.
  • Choose JPG for photos that were saved as PNG by mistake — transparent areas become white.
  • For screenshots with small text, check the preview at a quality of 85% or more.

FAQ

Good to know

  • Will my transparent background survive?
Yes with WebP, which keeps transparency. JPG has none, so transparent areas turn white.
  • Can I keep the file as a PNG and still make it smaller?
Not with this tool. It makes PNG files smaller by saving them as WebP or JPG; a PNG stays lossless, so its size depends on the image.
  • Is WebP accepted everywhere?
Every current browser and most social networks and site builders accept WebP. Some forms and older programs still want JPG or PNG, so check before you upload.
