About this setting

Where you need a square

Square images are the default for profile pictures on almost every network, for product photos in online shops and marketplaces, and for album and podcast covers. Unlike the resize settings, which always cut from the centre, the crop tool lets you drag the square to the part of the photo you want.

The crop keeps the original pixels at full resolution. A 4000 × 3000 photo becomes a 3000 × 3000 square, which you can then resize to the exact size a site asks for.

Tips

  • For a profile picture, leave some space above the head: many sites show the square as a circle.
  • For product photos, leave an even margin around the product on all four sides.
  • Need a specific pixel size? Crop here, then resize the square to that size.

FAQ

Good to know

  • How big will my square be?
As big as the shorter side of your photo allows: a 4000 × 3000 photo gives a 3000 × 3000 square. The exact size is shown under the frame.
  • Can I make a square without cutting anything off?
Not by cropping, which always removes part of a photo that is not square. The AI image expander can add matching background to make it square instead.
  • Which sites need square images?
Profile pictures nearly everywhere, product photos in most online shops, Instagram square posts and album or podcast covers.
