About this setting
Choosing the strip that stays
9:16 is the shape of a phone held upright, used by Instagram and Facebook stories, Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Cropping an upright 3:4 phone photo to 9:16 keeps three quarters of its width; a horizontal photo keeps less than half, so where you place the frame decides the whole picture.
The crop keeps full resolution: a 3000 × 4000 photo gives a 2250 × 4000 crop, more than these apps display. Resize it to 1080 × 1920 afterwards if you want to control the final size yourself.
Tips
- Place faces in the upper half: captions and buttons cover the bottom of the screen.
- From a horizontal photo, choose the strip that tells the story, such as one person or one building.
- For a full-width scene, the AI image expander can extend the photo upwards and downwards instead.
