About this setting

The shape of almost every screen

16:9 is the shape of HD and 4K video, most laptop and TV screens, YouTube thumbnails and the default slide in PowerPoint, Keynote and Google Slides. A photo cropped to 16:9 fills those frames without black bars.

Phone photos are usually 4:3, so a 16:9 crop removes about a quarter of the height. With the frame you choose whether to keep the sky, the ground or a balance of both, instead of losing equal strips from the top and bottom.

Tips

  • Place the horizon on the upper or lower grid line for a more natural look.
  • For a slide background, leave calm space on one side for the text.
  • For a 1280 × 720 YouTube thumbnail, crop here first, then resize to that size.

FAQ

Good to know

  • What is 16:9 in pixels?
Common sizes are 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080 and 3840 × 2160. The crop keeps your photo's own resolution; resize it afterwards if you need one of these exact sizes.
  • Will cropping to 16:9 cut off heads?
Only if the frame is placed badly. Drag the frame up or down until the faces are inside it before you download.
  • Is 16:9 the same as 1920 × 1080?
1920 × 1080 is one 16:9 size. Any image whose width is 16/9 of its height has the same shape.
