About this setting

When PNG is the better choice

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it is the format design tools, slide decks and print shops expect for logos and graphics. Converting a WebP to PNG keeps every pixel of the WebP and its transparent areas, ready to place on any background.

For photos, PNG is rarely worth it: a PNG photo can be several times larger than the WebP it came from, with no visible gain. Choose JPG for photos and PNG for graphics.

Tips

  • Transparent areas stay transparent in the PNG, so a logo can sit on any colour.
  • Use PNG when you will edit the image again — it does not lose quality with each save.
  • For a photo, converting WebP to JPG gives a much smaller file.

FAQ

Good to know

  • Is the transparent background kept?
Yes. PNG supports transparency, so the transparent areas of the WebP stay transparent.
  • Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?
PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel exactly. For photos that makes a large file; for logos and graphics the difference is smaller.
  • Is converting WebP to PNG lossless?
The conversion adds no loss: the PNG holds exactly the pixels the WebP shows. Detail that a lossy WebP already discarded cannot be brought back.
