About this setting

Why websites give you WebP

Most large websites now serve images as WebP because the files are 25–35% smaller than JPG, which makes pages load faster. When you save such an image, you get the WebP — and some photo editors, print shops, government forms and older programs still do not accept it.

Converting to JPG keeps the full width and height. The JPG may be a little larger than the WebP, because JPG compresses less efficiently; that is expected and is not a loss of quality.

Tips

  • 90% quality looks identical to the WebP for almost every photo.
  • A transparent WebP, such as a logo, gets a white background as JPG — choose PNG to keep the transparency.
  • An animated WebP is converted as a single still frame.

FAQ

Good to know

  • Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?
A tiny amount, because JPG is lossy too. At 90% quality the difference cannot be seen; choose PNG if you need a lossless copy.
  • Why is my JPG bigger than the WebP?
WebP compresses photos more efficiently than JPG. A JPG of the same image at the same visible quality is usually 25–35% larger.
  • Can I convert an animated WebP?
Only its first frame is converted, as a still JPG. The JPG format cannot hold animation.
